Skin Type Reveal: Find Out and Love Your Skin

Have you ever done the skin type reveal, which gives you the information about your skin type? Knowing your type is crucial as it’s the basic foundation of choosing the right skincare products and makeup for you. With the abundance of products out there, choosing a particular product can be a headache. But you can make the process go easier when you know your skin type. Plus, you definitely want to choose the right products when you have certain skin issues, so you shouldn’t avoid this crucial first step.

The Importance of Skin Type Reveal

You should know that different products are created for different purposes. Knowing the exact type of your skin would ensure that you have picked the most suitable one. Here’s a simple example: Most products for dry skin are made from oil-based ingredients, while most products for oily skin are water-based. Imagine when you have oily skin, but you choose products with oil-based contents. Your skin would be even more oily and you are prone to acne or zits.

When you choose the wrong products, it may lead to negative effects that may make your issues worse. When you pick the right products that go along with your skin type, you can actually prevent harmful effects (and possibly other negative effects) that may aggravate your condition. Moreover, many of these products aren’t cheap, so you need to be extra careful when spending money on them. You don’t want your hard-earned money to go into a waste just like that.

Performing Skin Type Test

Basically, there are two simple tests that you can perform at home. They are easy and they don’t need any fancy equipment.

Bare Face Method

You only need to wash and cleanse your face by using a cleanser. Just use the gentle type and then you need to pat dry by using a gentle towel. Remember, don’t scrub. And then wait for around 30 minutes before performing this test. Don’t forget to also look into the mirror.

  • If the skin looks shiny all over your face (especially on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead), then big chances you have the oily type.
  • If the skin feels scaly or flaky or tight, especially when you smile, then it’s likely that you have dry skin.
  • When your T zone (the forehead and nose) looks a bit shiny, and your skin somewhat feels comfortable and hydrated, then you have normal skin.
  • If you see shine only on the T zone, but not the cheeks, then it’s likely that you have combination skin.
  • When you feel a slight itchiness and you see redness in the facial tone, it’s quite likely that you have sensitive skin.

The Blotting Sheet

This test is considered quicker than the bare face method. All you have to do is to use a blotting sheet that will absorb oil. Start it off by washing your face. Dab it dry and wait for around 30 minutes. Go with a good-quality blotting sheet and press it to different areas of your face. Remember, dab or pat the sheet, NOT swipe or rub.

Afterwards, hold up the sheets to any light source so you can see the oil marking.

  • If the sheet is soaked in a lot of oil, then you have an oily face.
  • If you find very little (even no oil), then big chances you have dry skin.
  • If you see only a little oil, and the oil marking only comes from the forehead and nose (which is the T zone and not the cheeks), then you have combination skin.
  • If the sheet only has very little oil from various areas within your face, then you have normal skin.

If you have done these tests, and yet, you are still unsure about your skin type, you can always go to a professional dermatologist and have it checked. The result is most likely accurate and the dermatologist can also provide suggestions and advice about the proper care.

Skincare Basics

Regardless of your skin types, you need to do these things if you want to have healthy and glowing skin.

  • Always avoid direct sunray exposure. When it’s sunny, wear sunglasses and a hat.
  • Always apply sunscreen that goes with your skin type. Pick the broad-spectrum one that can block out the harmful rays (UVA and also UVB).
  • Hydration is crucial so make sure you stay hydrated.
  • Avoid smoking. And avoid the smoke from cigarettes (when you are a passive smoker).
  • Always use moisturizer.
  • Always cleanse your skin. Do it gently and regularly. Avoid wearing makeup when you are going to bed.

Final Words

There is no best skin type. Although most people believe that normal skin type is the best, it’s still prone to issues and damages when you are careless about the proper care. It’s not the perfect type, mind you. The perfect skin is the one that is healthy, well hydrated, and fresh. That’s why you need to do the skin type reveal before picking any product for it.
